That Time a Book Left Me an Emotional Mess: A Book Review

Hello Loves!

So I’ve read this title back in August when it came out and have been horrible in that I haven’t reviewed it until just now. I’m a little thankful for that as I feel like I would have been a lot more all over the place, spoilerly, and emotional. I’m still a little emotional and a bit all over the place, but I think it’s a lot clearer than it would have been lol. So…alright then, read on below for my thoughts 🙂

my-review2I have to be honest. This review might be all over the place. This novel, It Ends With Us by Colleen Hoover, took me on an emotional roller-coaster that I wasn’t really prepared for. I’m not sure you really can prepare emotionally for this book.

I think the novel hit closer to home for me since I’m closer in age to Lily, the main character. Mostly I read YA or (recently) Middle Grade. While I can relate to a lot of what those characters are going through, reading about another fellow twenty-something rings a bit truer for me right now. Navigating the twenties is a bit turbulent as this is the time when we’re really figuring things out and trying to find some steadier ground. It was nice reading from a character’s POV that was more current with what I was going through even if I wasn’t doing exactly everything Lily was.

On that note, it’s easy to see that I instantly connected to Lily as a character. I liked her honesty and her willpower to go after her dreams. I loved her strength, especially at the end.

Hoover does an amazing job with this story. Every interaction, each plot point, all the secondary characters–they all come together to really form a perfectly crafted story. I was glued to the pages and somehow ended up crying at 2 AM as I reached certain aspects of the story.

While I’ve never experienced the issues brought to light in this novel personally, I still felt that Hoover did a good job of portraying these situations and the character’s reactions realistically. I found that I came away with a lot more appreciation and understanding for women who’ve experienced this storyline.

I don’t want to get into too much detail which I guess is bad for a review, but I honestly think you have to read this one for yourself. I want you to experience it on your own without too many spoilers or too much of my input. I think that’s the best way to go into this novel. Without too many ideas of where it’s going to go and then just let the experience of reading the story wash over you.

In the end, I really really loved this one. It was my first Colleen Hoover book, so I’m not sure how her other titles are, but I’m definitely looking to read them now! Her writing style really highlighted her skill as a writer and I enjoyed reading this book immensely. I highly recommend this book! So go grab it and read it right now! Oh, and bring some tissues with you 😉

gut-reaction

This story seriously gutted me! This week’s smartest decision: to stop reading the book in public and finish the last 300 pages alone in my room. I was crying so much from this book. It sucked me and messed me up, but I love this book so much. It was a book I’m so thankful I got to read and experience. I’m literally full of so much emotion that I can’t even say anything else other than (if you are okay to) to go read this book!
